Hamsters, Rabbits, Cats & Dogs

About

Hi there!

My name is Erin and I am (to say the least) an animal enthusiast! Growing up in a house full of pets, everything from cats and dogs to frogs and tortoises, I have always had a love of animals and knew from a young age that life without pets was just not an option for me.

After spending my early teen years rescuing and adopting dozens of stray cats alongside my animal-loving mother and doing volunteer work in a local dog pound at 15 I turned my attention towards hamsters and because obsessed with them for several years keeping several different species during that time. All of my free time was spent either researching as much as I could about them, attempting to perfect their habitats or participating in hamster shows (yep, those are a thing!)

In 2011 after several failed YouTube channels I started up one dedicated to hamster care and I was amazed when the channel began to blossom! People seemed to enjoy watching my videos as much as I enjoyed making them! In 2013 we owned just two hamsters, a Syrian named Einstein and a Winter White dwarf named Amylase. It was at this time that a beautiful mixed breed rabbit, who we named Jack, fell into our life when he was in desperate need of an immediate home or destined for someone's cook pot. Rabbits are not as commonly kept as pets in this country and are typically found on the dining table so providing adequate care can be quite tricky but so far we have managed it!

In early 2014 a cat in my mothers care gave birth to a litter of kittens which were sadly orphaned at just 5 weeks old, from that litter my partner and I decided to take the fawn coloured male for ourselves and name him Bertie. Cats have always held a very special place in my heart and will always be my favourite domestic animal so it's not surprising that I have built a very close bond with my beautiful house cat who I affectionately refer to as my personal advisor (too weird?)

In mid 2014 my sister sadly lost one of her two elderly rabbits to a sickness and afraid that her remaining rabbit, Candy, would suffer on her own asked if we would take her in and bond her with Jack. As Jack was neutered and both rabbits had compatible personalities we accepted Candy with open arms and were joyed to see her and Jack bond successfully within just a few months.

By the end of 2014 we already had 5 wonderful animals living in our care but we had a space open for one more pet when the time was right. Well that time came several months earlier than planned when we met a very friendly and lovable street dog who we built a bond with and named John Hurt after his resemblance to the actor. After hearing that the local pound had also found the street dog and taken it in we rushed to find out what was to become of John. Pound dogs in Cyprus often have very bleak futures with few finding homes and many facing euthanasia due to overcrowding. We had made the fatal choice to build a bond with this dog and knowing what the future held for him we made the decision to ensure he would not have to experience that life and we adopted him in December 2014.

In 2015 my YouTube channel branched out into not only hamster care but rabbit, cat and dog care too and was appropriately renamed from ErinsHamsters to ErinsAnimals.

So thats my story! This blog was started as an extra outlet for pet care and tips that I was not able to put into videos so you will find lots of extra information here as well as YouTube related topics and a few personal posts. I hope you enjoy this blog as much as my channel and if you have never watched my channel before please be sure to check it out and help support us!
